"Where to go next?" is part of the research project "Statt Daten Stadtdaten" by the Institute for Design Strategies (IDS) at the Technical University of Ostwestfalen-Lippe in collaboration with the city of Detmold.
Over the next four years, we will explore how data collected in urban spaces can be made publicly accessible and used for the common good. The project is part of the Smart City funding program of the BMWSB (Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban and Rural Affairs). During the Detmold Design Week (DDW), we are testing an important principle of the research project.
Over the next four years, we will explore how data collected in urban spaces can be made publicly accessible and used for the common good. The project is part of the Smart City funding program of the BMWSB (Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban and Rural Affairs). During the Detmold Design Week (DDW), we are testing an important principle of the research project.
Data, in this case the number of visitors at selected exhibition sites, is collected in real-time and visualized on-site (so-called situated visualization). Recommendations for the next location to visit are given at each site based on the utilization of surrounding locations. The data from all locations is also presented centrally on a map at location 1.
The aim of this installation is to evaluate the willingness of citizens to follow computer generated data based recommendations. For this reason, a survey was carried out.
In relation to the overall project, the experiences gathered here will help to develop concepts for various datasets that emerge in urban spaces, and consider how they can be easily visualized on-site to help citizens in their daily lives. The focus is particularly on integration into the built environment, which appeals to all sections of the population. The vizualisation interface should be integrated in the urban space in universal and inclusive way.

The graphic shows a simple example of this, but the plan is to expand this principle to other fields such as sustainability, consumption, and mobility with more advanced ways of visualization.
