This project was born from my experience as a student at the Architecture and Urbanism School at Mackenzie Presbyterian University and from the desire to study in more inspiring settings, such as the nearby Architecture School at Universidade de São Paulo (USP). Nonetheless, Mackenzie’s School of Architecture has the advantage over USP’s because it is more centrally located, making it easier for its students to have constant contact with the urban, dense, downtown environment. The goal then was to unite these two qualities, proposing an inspiring architecture school in the midst of downtown São Paulo.

The chosen venue was Largo São Francisco, a square that is one of the vertexes of the Triângulo Histórico (the Historic Triangle), and where already exist two other universities, USP Law School and Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) Commerce School. The insertion of a new school would then create a triad of schools in the area.
It would not make sense to just insert a project in a historic public space with such significance without first thinking about an urban renewal of the area. With that in mind it was proposed placing the streets that cross the Largo underground with the intent of linking it to the boardwalks of the historic downtown above, and creating a square connecting all three schools.
The design approach for the school was to create a building that would cover the windowless facade, with an overall building height and width similar to the surrounding buildings, aiming to fit in respectfully in the environment without blocking the view of Igreja de São Francisco when you go down Rua São Bento.
Each subtraction of the initial volume opens a view to the historic buildings on the site or the main square.
